You are complaining the wrong things

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: 1-6 months

Recommend Product: YES

There were some problems in release 9.0 which are now fixed but everybody keeps on complaining (btw: if you weren't so keen on always beeing the very first with the newest version without needing it you would have not run into problems).
Strangely enough the recent complaints are not at all about the product but about the company collecting email-adresses. And you just mess everything up, so let me put this straight: You DON'T have to give your email-adress to download this product, you just leave the fields blank, click the button and there you are. If you are not able to read and understand a download page don't critizise the company for it.
You have to give your email-adress before downloading a demo version of STUFFIT STANDARD which is a completely different thing (and also a great product I can only recommend, but not free). So please open you eyes and learn to differentiate between different applications. (And talking of your abilities, a pity that you don't rule the world and decree which kind of compression format we will use)

This is a great product which opens whatever archive you have and it's free! It's very easy to use and works without problems for me .

(Ah, and I am sure that all of you complainers have already written some major pice of useful software and gave it away for free, so you are really at the level to run down people who do.)

Wow that was harsh. I'm sorry, but I just don't like ungraceful people that supply wrong facts in reviews.

That's not the point, it's superfluous. - lullabud

I'd actually be more happy if this software cost money. Why? Because maybe then companies would stop distributing their releases in .sit format. Hell, even this software itself is distributed in DMG. Go figure, it does everything that is needed, and it's OS X native, no need to install. Stuffit's only purpose is to perpetuate its historical purpose, and that purpose has been filled otherwise.

I've had my problems with Stuffit in the past, but this release seems to be OK. It's just superfluous, that's all.

Not superfluous yet - John Sawyer

It's not superfluous if you have a file in Stuffit format, and you need to unstuff it. I don't think OS X's built-in compression/decompression software handles Stuffit files.

As to whether users should refuse to use any files that have are in Stuffit format, as a way of sending a signal to developers to stop releasing files in this format--that's a little like cutting off your nose to spite your face. I doubt that the continued availability of Stuffit Expander is what's driving software authors to release files in Stuffit format. As to what is, I don't know. But as long as they do, you'll need Stuffit.

Of course it is OK to rate a bad software bad, wether it is free or not. What I say is (read below if you like), that many people here are not rating the software fairly: They are rating one star, but are not even talking about the software but about the collection of emails.

You are complaining the wrong things - kalico

I am furious at these guys and can barely beleive your post in defense of them.

"You are complaining about the wrong things"

Thanks for that. I guess we should only complain about things that don't annoy us. What were we thinking?

"You DON'T have to give your email-adress to download this product"

Have you actually tried downloading the expander from their site? (I'm not talking about from here). I didn't think so. The email adress IS required and you are talking complete drivel.

"You have to give your email-adress before downloading a demo version of STUFFIT STANDARD which is a completely different thing"

This is true that you also need one for the other versions. However, you imply that you don't need to give an email address if you are downloading just the expander - which as stated above is an outright lie.

"So please open you eyes and learn to differentiate between different applications"

Um...perhaps you should take heed of your own advice. When you go to their site and try to download JUST the stuffit expander it clearly asks you for an email address for which it will send download details to.

"Ah, and I am sure that all of you complainers have already written some major pice of useful software and gave it away for free, so you are really at the level to run down people who do."

Bahaha! You think the people that give away the expander software for free are altruistic angels? They make their money off the COMPRESSION software. It's a similar business model to Adobe giving their readers away for free but making people pay for the writers. Its just good business sense - they're not stupid and they're certainly not benevolent.

Anyway, I am thankful that I can get it here without signing up to their spams (you don't even get an opt out checkbox and opting out after being emailed by them DOESN'T count).

I will never compress anything ever again using stuffit and I will reccomend to my company and friends that they steer clear of the product. If possible I will avoid downloading products that have .sit as the only file type option.

Hm, why so outraged, why so polemic?

I know you deny it, but nevertheless: I downloaded my file without giving my email-adress. I don't say they point you right to it, they have different wishes. I don't know if it has changed since then (much time has passed) but it worked for me, mind you after all these complaints.
But even (let's pretend) if you had to give your mail: I personally would do it (and later just delete it again) in exchange for not having to pay this software. And of course it is not that difficult to get out of their list again as you pretend.
But (again) even if you chosse not to give your mail away, ok. You're welcome. Nobody forces you to use this software.
Of course a company wants to make some money, it's their purpose. Of course they want to collect mails. To blame them for that is a bit strange in my eyes. If you don't like it, just don't play around. You may even write a comment to inform other users that you don't like this sort of behaviour.
But to rate a good part of software bad is unfair, you do not talk about how good the software works (which is rating). This is what I mean when I say "You are complaining the wrong things".
