Is anyone running ANY G5 powermac with OS X 10.4.2 having trouble getting the installer to see that I've booted my mac while holding the shift key, thus entering this "Safe Boot" mode (which isn't apparent or displayed differently).
No matter what I do, I can't get the installer to get past the screen telling me to reboot into Safe Mode! Any workarounds? Help!

When I get home today, I'll try that out. One question I got for ya, how did you figure this out? How does one KNOW when OS X actually boots into "Safe Mode"? I mean, at least Windblowz plasters the screen with "Safe Mode" so you know wtf is up...Interesting.

Mainly I wondered how you figured out that the Open Firmware thinggy was doing that, where do you learn that stuff?Friday, August 12 2005 @ 01:54 PM PDT

Just one of those things; it's good for security purposes. And you'll know when you're booting in Safe Mode because it'll say so; you can't miss it on the login screen.Friday, August 12 2005 @ 03:09 PM PDT

The other thing that might be happening here is that the Agree / Disagree buttons are reversed. The Disagree button is defaulted to the Enter key, so if you are trying to get through the installation menu and hitting return to move to the next step, hitting return on Agree / Disagree will kick you back to the Safeboot warning screen. A simple oversight..Saturday, August 13 2005 @ 07:13 AM PDT

I had the same issue; turns out you can't boot into safe mode while you have an Open Firmware password enabled. (The Shift is ignored and it boots as usual.)Go to Apps/Utilities/Open Firmware Password and switch it off. Then, when you next shift-reboot, the login screen will display "Safe Mode" in red. On my older Mac I had to hold the Shift key for a good while; thought something was wrong, but no.
