Unfortunately, even the latest version of BG II is very buggy with lots of things not working properly. For example, the weapon Azuredge does not slay undead like it is supposed to. Fortunately, there is a large community of BG fans who have been working on fixes. You can get the latest version at: http://ire.mainecoon.net/IRE/betas.html

ire.mainecoon.net seems to have given up the ghost. Any idea where it may have relocated to?

The Baldurdash fixpacks are by now seriously outdated. I highly recommend using the BG2 Fixpack (http://www.gibberlings3.net/bg2fixpack/) instead - it includes many additional fixes, and its developers provide native Mac installers for each release.
