I periodically do a search for to-do list managers and recently bought BurnoutMenu because of its integration with iCal, which I use in conjunction with my Palm.
Good: It has an icon on the main toolbar, so I can call up the list with a minimum of fuss. This works well. From that toolbar, I can invoke the "manager" screen, the preferences, and several other tools. In manager, I can see/edit entries which are listed by categories (that I can define in addition to the calendar/categories from iCal). Price of around $6 is quite reasonable. Oh, I've checked the virtual memory usage and do not have the problems others have reported.
Poor: The to-do list when invoked from the toolbar is not as compact as I'd like. When I create a new filter to view some of the categories, I cannot edit it once it's defined. If I do, when I press the OK button, nothing happens. I have to cancel in order to close the window. The only way I can change the filter is to delete it and redefine it. Finally, iCal integration is very poor. When I first set up the app, it got the iCal entries. However, if I add/edit entries in iCal or add entries in BurnoutMenu (those connected to iCal categories), there is no integration. Changes to iCal do not appear in BurnoutMenu and visa versa - even after 24 hours. Also, BurnoutMenu does not support hierarchical to-dos, other than having top layer categories and entries within each.
Bottom line - it's got good features, but some don't work well, if at all. I'm on the verge of going back to my former to-do app, which doesn't integrate with iCal, but otherwise does a better job.

Which was your former to-do app that did a better job? Unless it was not menubar-based, I only know one alternative, which is not reliable at all and has less features even apart from iCal (which I do not use).Reply to This
