Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Less than a month

Recommend Product: NO

This is about as slick a blog client as I've seen, but I really have to mistrust a piece of software that wants to phone home to reversetheplanet.com at startup. I won't be using this software, and I think I'll just change my journal password too while I'm at it.

You just got here from Windows. right? This ain't that. If the "phoning home" really bothers you, get Little Snitch. But it really is okay to drop the paranoia level a few hundred notches, and it is really not okay to single out ecto; this is the routine manner in which OS X apps perform version update checks, and can usually be turned off in Preferences anyway.

And you owe Adriaan four more stars, dude.

That's the version-check. At start up, ecto loads http://kung-foo.tv/ecto2.xml which to verify if it's the latest version. You can turn that off in the Preferences dialog. There's no phoning-home.

When you purchase ecto via eSellerate and enter the serial provided, there is a one-time activation. That's all.

There is no transmission of private data or whatever.
