I have recently solved two peoples problems with Palm Desktop conflicts the following way:
Check the Startup Items in the Accounts System Pref Pane.
There should only be one occurrence of
Palm Desktop Background
Transport Monitor
Multiple instances of these will cause hassle.
If doing a reinstall perhaps make sure they have all gone first so you know
the correct versions of these are talking to the new version of the App. Palm Desktop.
