The problem I referred to before, of flashing overlays and subsequent serious video corruption, turned out to be a problem with version 1.08 of the X800 ROM, and I've since seen similar effects elsewhere.
I'm pleased to say that the recently-released version 1.09 ROM update for the X800 fixes the problem.
