ED HAMRICK, GIVE THE PURCHASER OF YOUR SOFTWARE THE LAST VERSION HE WAS ENTITLED TO. THE PURCHASER ONLY WANTS TO PUT BACK A FUNCTIONING, LICENSED COPY OF YOUR SOFTWARE BACK ON HIS COMPUTER. HE DID BUY YOUR SOFTWARE. DON'T PENALIZE HIM JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE PISSED OFF BECAUSE HE DOES NOT WANT TO UPGRADE.Friday, June 24 2005 @ 11:07 AM PDT

That's exactly right! I PURCHASED the standard edition. PURCHASED, not rented. Had any notification that any future upgrades would available for purchase only, I would have at least had the courtesy of opting to retain my functioning standard PURCHASED version. I still assert that I would be happy to reinstall the last version available to me, but am told that version is no longer on the Hamrick hard drive. Dirty pool! That's my strory and I'm sticking to it.Monday, June 06 2005 @ 10:48 AM PDT

What one purchases when one purchases software is a license to use that software, nothing more. To the extent that the developer offers bug fixes and additional features, the user benefits, while the developer builds a solid reputation for maintenance and improvements. To my knowledge no developer adds value more consistently than Ed Hamrick.
In this case there were two options. The cheaper of the two was chosen, apparently in the odd hope that if the terms were left unread they would not apply.
Last, if one is serious about preserving the functionality of his system over time, he must archive his installers. Then he will never need to beg a man in whose eye he has spat.

I agree with the rebuttals but would like to point out that when you download Vuescan you get just the app and not an installer nor a .dmg so the tendency would be to just drag it to the Application folder. Most other software leaves you with a backup in the form of an installer or such. You have to make a duplicate or a compressed version of Vuescan yourself.- Scott Beach, Toronto

It seems to me that a simple way round this issue would be for Ed Hamrick to make earlier versions of Vuescan available (for a limited time?), so that anyone who has forgotten when their year's support runs out can redownload an earlier version.Even simpler would be for people to back up their stuff and not to blame one of the best developers around for their failings.
I'm just grateful for the unlimited updates in the Pro edition. This is such a useful app!

This is undoubtedly a very good app, but this pricing scheme, while legal, is unusual, so I have every sympathy with the complainant. It is easy to miss the terms and easier still not to realise their implications. Mr. Hamrick should provide both earlier versions of VueScan and a clearly worded warning before someone downloads an update which will have this effect. What Mr. Hamrick has done is lured him in at one price, and then put him in an arm lock which left him little alternative but to upgrade after a year. One expects this behaviour from Microsoft, but it is very surprising from a small developer, however well written his software, or diligent he is at keeping it upgraded. It would be much more honest to simply charge the $90 from the start, as plenty of people here think it well worth the price. So a big thumbs down to you Mr Hamrick.

You sir, are a moron - Ilgaz
Mr. Hamrick is a polite guy to handle all this misinformation.Let a non polite user as me tell this thing: YOU ARE A MORON.
It writes when you buy TO KEEP THE DOWNLOAD IN SAFE PLACE as Vuescan versions AREN'T ARCHIVED!
IN BIG LETTERS LIKE THIS ONE.

i've licensed VueScan since before Mac OS X, before it was forked into pro/non-pro, and before the time when Mac support was dropped temporarily; i've watched the frequent updates, which seem fairly genuine, but also a handy way to get noticed; all along i've felt that VueScan is a great tool, so i've recommended it dozens of times in public forums and privatelybut i would certainly hope Ed Hamrick has kept a well-archived set of previous versions on hand, and with this it would be the mark of a gentleman for him to do his best to serve his customers, a few of whom can be expected to both make the years-up mistake, *and* forget to keep the old version; surely Ed Hamrick made his own backups ...
this would be fair especially due to the unusual form of the non-pro license, which fails in that it doesn't give a user fixes for bugs that may be in the last version to which they are entitled; while most software developers refuse to give the slightest formal guarantee, good developers have an implicit guarantee in the way point versions are considered free updates and major versions are paid upgrades; some developers go as far as to fix significant bugs in _past_ versions; i think Ed Hamrick is a good enough developer he could fix his subscription model to incorporate an implicit guarantee to reasonable bug fixes after the year of updates has elapsed

Slipped A Mickey! -- or slack with your own responsibilities - Paul_Vail_674
I support Ed's decision to license his product as he sees fit. It is, after all, his product. The user of a computer is simply remiss if they aren't making backups of their installers. My suggestion to Ed would be to simply discontinue the cheap version. Trying to accommodate bargain users rarely pays off. Instead, cripple the product by a watermark on any scan generated from an unpaid version.
But this isn't to say being compassionate toward novice users can't also pay off. Maintaining this dual-license scheme suggests an archive download page with version/release date info would solve this kind of problem readily. Good will is a difficult entity to put a price tag upon.
I have a copy of 8.2.16 if the user still cannot find a backup.

I purchased the professional edition of VueScan at least two years ago, with the promise that I would have free upgrades for life. I've really enjoyed the software and have recommended it to at least a dozen other purchases.I did not need this upgrade, but – still under the impression that it would be a free upgrade – simply replaced the previous app over the new one. VersionTracker did not display any noticeable warning that my registration would be null and void.
Ed, please may I go back to the previous version? I may be a 'moron' as well, as some other of your supporters have been flamed, but I'll accept this epithet if I can go beck to using it. Should I contact you directly? Thanks, Tim Lumsdaine

Slipped A Mickey! Correction and thanx - dang_thang_dotmac
I've just gone to the hamrick.com site after finding my original serial number (had to launch Classic to find it... euch!) and on getting the info that I could update my old serial number for free managed to do this without any problems. I realised that I'd purchased VS in late '02, before the Non-Pro and Pro versions split. Many thanks Ed for your continued support. You're still the best in my book!

The Standard Edition of VueScan includes one year of free upgrades. The Professional Edition includes unlimited free upgrades. lrhea purchased the Standard Edition of VueScan more than one year ago, so isn't entitled to a free upgrade. He is entitled to a discounted upgrade (only $40 to upgrade from the Standard Edition to the Professional Edition).Reply to This
