I keep going back to LaunchBar. The worst thing about Butler is that it is one of the most confusingly designed applications I've seen. It's better than the wildly over-designed Quicksilver, but not by much. It took me the longest time to figure out why the changes I was making to the abbreviations settings (which are difficult to find in the first place) were not taking. I finally realized it was because there are actually two copies of it by default. One is in the menu, and one is "invisible" but active. I did not interpret "invisible" as there but you can't see it, rather as disabled. Perhaps I'm a dope, but I found the setup extremely confusing. Anyway, I finally got it all set up like I wanted but then I found that I couldn't drag and drop onto applications within Butler - that's a key feature of LaunchBar that I find indispensable. Instead in Butler I have to reveal in finder, then drag and drop onto it, then close the finder window I didn't want open in the first place. What a nuisance! If Butler had that feature, I'd use it, but since it doesn't I'll stick to my outdated copy of LaunchBar - it's better and worth the price even if it isn't as slick looking. Of course all of these type utilities need to now tie into the Spotlight index to make them have on-the-fly indexing for free, eliminating outdated indexes and the need for periodic updating.

Ah, you've got to love the old Launchbar stalwarts, so ridiculously insecure in their $$PAID$$ choice that every time someone mentions or displays one of the free alternatives they become apopleptic and wave their arms around trying to hit all of the free alternatives at once. Relax man, you chose Launchbar at the beginning of time, and no-one's going to notice you smoking that familiar old pipe in the corner. It's OK. Really.

In the meantime some of us old Launchbar advocates discovered the joy of Quicksilver. A bit like leaving Mac OS 9 for Mac OS X. (Err, 10.4). Sorry, that's a bit low.
