WARNING! do not use with USB headsets

Feedback Type:  Review

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Less than a month

Recommend Product: NO

The first voice recordings I did with this software using my Plantronics USB headset resulted in crackling noise in the background, I assume after changing the a bitrate setting in the audio preferences in Audacity. HOWEVER, the crackling did not stop even after quitting the application, or even uninstalling it! Before launching Audacity, my headset worked great, now I get crackling noise in every recording, no matter wich software I used. I plugged th headset into a different computer and it worked fine... So I downloaded Audacity again, launched the software with its default settings, and somehow it "reset" whatever Audacity changed at a very deep system level back to what it was before. I quit Audacity and now the crackling was gone on all system levels. In my twenty years of Apple Mac experience, this was a stunning error. There is no comparison. This app changed the way OSX worked wit the USB headset EVEN AFTER quitting and deleting. I RECOMMEND TO STAY AWAY FROM THIS APPLICATION !

WARNING! do not use with USB headsets - lnewton1

With a different audio application I had a cracking because the processor wasn't fast enough to deal with the demands. Could that be the problem?

It may well be the program. Before I found a program, Audio Recorder, which sounds like it has similar functions to this one.
I have a powerbook so there is line in, and a built in mike next to the left speaker.
Audio Recorder has a setting for 'monitor input'. Which is good when using the line in or for listening through headphones.
But after I quit the program and pulled out the 'line in', every time I didn't have headphones plugged in, my speakers fed back on me. I thought the sound card had died, but eventually re-opening the program and then turing off 'monitor input' fixed my feedback problem.
This is not the first time a sound editing program has altered stuff deep in the system.

Thanks for the warning (even if I found it too late!). I've now managed to reset the deep level mischief that Audacity caused on my iBook. I can only confirm the warning - DON'T USE IT WITH A USB HEADSET! If you do, be aware that you'll need to reset the sample rate in the audio settings panel of Audacity preferences before you can get rid of the nasty crackle and distortion on any recording. Then get rid of Audacity.
