Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Less than a month

Recommend Product: NO

This is for people with more money than time. What really killed it for me is the hosting fees!

If you run your own webserver, you can install MediaWiki for free and have the same superb software used by http://www.wikipedia.com and with EXCELLENT free support via their mailing list.

If you don't want to run a webserver, you can still use MediaWiki for free at http://www.wikicities.com but you'll have a few unobtrusive ads on your site.

The wiki concept takes a while to grok, but it is really powerful once you get going. I'm in the process of converting nearly all my static pages on my website to wiki pages.

Hosting fees don't apply if you run ProjectForum yourself. Just download and run the software on your own machine, for free. If you want to add some extra features, higher end versions start at $49.

MediaWiki is great, but ProjectForum serves a different need, a wiki for a smaller, often more private, group. You don't always want to use the same software designed to allow open editing by anyone for a wiki used by you and your coworkers. They have different features.

Plus, MediaWiki is NOT easy or quick to install unless you like mucking with databases, hacking HTML pages and config files, etc. With ProjectForum, just download and double click and it's running.
