I am one of the dozens effected by the pulsating, chirping and whining noise problems with G5 Powermacs... You can't live with it as it drives you mad (unless you have some klicpse speakers booming 24/7, thou the chrips are transmitted through the speakers, and the neighbours do complain) I even did Apple's power-supply exchanged programme... though it did 'remove' some of the noises (under 10.3) Yet all returned with Tiger 10.4! Damn it Apple! So im back to the tried and trust worthy chud tools 'disable nap' routine... I give chud tools 5 stars for the 'noise issues' I cant say anything else for I only use it for the 'disable nap' feature

Turning of NAP will make your G5 waste 100W extra all the time!! Is this really what you want? In german we have a saying "Strom kommt aus der Steckdose"...Thursday, June 09 2005 @ 03:58 AM PDT

I think the world's power generating capacity can stand having a few thousand G5s dissipating an extra 100 watts each, though I find that figure somewhat questionable--where's the documentation that says this is how much extra power is used? Even if that's the case, it's probably offset by the amount of power that would be used by G5 owners in turning on a stereo to blast out the chirping sounds, or the amount of gas used in getting in their cars to drive somewhere else to get away from their noisy G5s. If the concern is with extra wear and tear on the processor, that's a more genuine concern, but as long as the chip is kept at a proper temperature, the extra wear, possibly requiring the processor to be replaced a little sooner, might be worth it, compared to the wear and tear on the user's comfort level or even sanity.Thursday, September 22 2005 @ 05:08 PM PDT

"Strom kommt aus der Steckdose"According to Google translation, in English that would be:
"River comes from the plug socket"
Sure, who could argue with that? Way to communicate ....

Still the only solution! - Gary P
I took my dual 2.7 in twice for service under warranty. The first time, Apple replaced the proccessors. The beeping was not fixed. The second time, Apple replaced the motherboard & the power supply. The beeping was not fixed. Actually, both techs claimed they couldn't hear the beeping. Why would Apple spend $1600 in parts to attempt to fix an issue they deny even exists? I have given up. It's CHUD-->Uncheck Nap from now on.Wednesday, September 21 2005 @ 05:51 PM PDT

The repeated trips to the service center were because Apple's source of repair parts is the same batch that was manufactured for assembly into the finished computer, complete with the same flaws. Apple uses up these parts before they begin using a subsequent revision that has had the proper parts installed, or the design improved, etc. Apple calls this "being thrifty".Thursday, September 22 2005 @ 05:13 PM PDT

regarding the CHUD tools. I have used it to "Nap" the computer so it runs about 15 deg cooler and much quieter. But recent builds do not have it available. You mentioned turning it off, can you tell me how to turn it on?Reply to This
