just thought i'd mention that i had the same problem as several people below - xounds not working in tiger

the solution for me, was just to reinstall xounds 2.3 and reboot..
..sounds are back, and it's as it was in 10.3.9

Reboot didn't work for me, so just on a hunch tried "Log Out/In" - that worked.
