Being an idiot I went and bought 2 boxes of FD 7 when it was initially released - one for me, and one for my girlfriend. The software was so staggeringly awful that we both reverted to my hacked version of FD 4, which runs flawlessly in OS X Classic mode, and which lacks nothing as far as features are concerned.
(Irony - we now have a total of 4 legal copies of Final Draft - FD 4, FD 6, and 2 FD7s but we're still using an illegal copy of FD 4, because it's the only thing that works properly. We have it on an emac, an iBook and about 5 older macs going back to a powerbook 180. Hey, if someone would simply port FD 4 to OS X that would solve most of the complaints.)
Anyway, I downloaded this new April 2005 update for FD 7 and to my surprise it works on my Emac. There is a bit font flicker - the line above the one you're typing sometimes loses the tails on ys, gs and ps, if you see what I mean - but it isn't a permanant or serious flaw, such as crashing every 5 minutes.
So, if you've already got FD 7 you definitely need to give this upgrade a try. It was surprisingly painless - download it, dump old version (well, I'd done that already...) , install new. If your drive is already autheniticated you won't have to go through that again - the newly installed software launches without a murmer.
Been using it for several days now - no crashes, no horrors. At last, FD 7 is usable.
(Having said that, it doesn't work at all on my Lombard Powerbook. It launches, and looks fine - menus are there, toolbar is there, the big resizable workspace is there -- but where's the insert point? Where's the "paper"?! Scrollbars? Ruler? Try typing - nothing happens. Completely useless but on the bright side, it's very stable...
Haven't tried it on the iBook yet. But for the record, all our OSX capable machines are running OS X 10.3.8 with no problems.)

I agree with you about FD4. That was a sleek and reliable product. Maybe I still have the installers someplace. However porting it to OS X is basically impossible, or at least it would be quicker to just write a new app (which is what I'm doing right now). The reason for this is that the text-handling is done by a system called Paige which went out of business a decade ago, and lots of the screen-drawing is done by incredibly low-level utilities which bypass the OS text layer completely.Reply to This
