If you have a professional multi-output audio interface like I do, then you should know that VLC can only play out of one channel at a time. It would be far more desireable if VLC coupled the outputs into stereo pairs. e.g. Output 1+2, 3+4, 5+6, etc..etc..
I should also note that VLC _is_ complying with the Coreaudio spec here, but its just a question of taking it one step further. It simply isn't useful playing a stereo file out of a single output channel only. I use output 1+2 for all computer output.
Note: If you select built-in, then you get the option to use a stereo output. My pro audio interface sounds much better than the built-in, so I'd rather use it for audio playback.
