Too many updates - And doesn't always launch

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Over One Year

I have used speed download for about two years now & quite like it. However the update rate is ridiculous. In March alone there have been SIX updates - SIX!!!
That's one every five days!
If this continues, there will have been over 70 updates to this software in a year - madness!
Everytime I go to download a file I get the update window popping up - very frustrating.
Also, many sites I visit (www.mobile9.com for instance), dont activate Speed download when transfers commence, so half my downloads end up on my desktop, the other half end up in Speed download folder.
When I was on dialup, this software was vital for being able to resume large downloads that had lost connection. On broadband its not nearly as important & with all these updates it's becoming a nuisance too.

Too many updates - And doesn't always launch - Yazsoft

Hey Jazzy,

Thanks for the feedback.

Regarding the updates, well we work hard to keep perfecting SD and we do this for our users. Whenever there is a new way of doing something or doing something better, we implement it, test it, and release it for our users to enjoy. As a developer it is our duty to mkae sure our users stay happy and keep value for their investment. We could not release an update and make people wait 2-3 months for each update. Many companies do that, we do not. From a user's stand point, there's nothing worse than having to wait to get a bug fixed or a feature request added. I know that as a user, and I'm sure many others share the same feeling. The updates will calm down a bit though now and we prepare our next major update.

As for the sites you mention that don't seem to download with SD, it may not necessarily be a fault in SD. Sometimes if you download a file with a file extension thats not enabled by default in the plugin section of the SD preferences, you simply need to enable it, and restart your browser and all will be well. We have tested and continue to test SD with thousands of websites every single day, and at times, we even work around flaws in remote server setups just so that our users aren't inconvenienced by it.

Nonetheless, nothing's perfect and if there is a site that you aren't getting to work with SD for whatever reason, by all means, email it in to support at info@yazsoft.com and we will look at it promptly.

Thanks again for your feedback and for your time.

Regards,

Mark

I agree - arodney

In in the same boat. I used it for a good year or two. But I'm experiencing issues with it not launching half the time and it's just become too much of a drag to use. I pulled it of the HD. I might try it again in the future but this isn't the product it once was.

Agreed - Xeater

A rapid succession of updates is indicative of a careless developer, who is always finding one last bug they forgot. It is better to get the program working right, release it, and then bundle small upgrades and fixes into occasional updates.

The downloader I use, iGetter, isn't so full of bells and whistles as Speed Download, but it just works, without having to download updates every freakin' couple of days. I tried Speed Download but it just tried to do too much, which is perhaps why the developer has such a hard time keeping on top of it.

Oh, another potential reason for frequent updates is to get better exposure on Versiontracker's new updates daily lists. I suspect some developers issue new releases on a regular basis to boost their presence on these VT lists. Whenever I follow the lists daily for a few months, it seems like certain developers show up over and over with repeated updates.
