I just downloaded and ran Duplicate Catcher 1.3.2.

Upon launch I was reminded that the software is shareware and that certain "advanced features" are disabled.

I immediately dragged-and-dropped a folder on the open application window. Nothing happened. Using the pop-up I selected "Custom" as the search start location and a drawer slid out. There was no open file dialog box and nothing indicating that I was to drag-and-drop a folder into the drawer. But of course, that was exactly it. Folders must be drug into the drawer area itself, dragging them to the main part of the window or the icon in the dock or the Finder has no effect.

I deselected the "Filename" criteria option and chose "Contents". I clicked "Find Duplicates" and it did so fairly quickly. I was curious as to what method had been employed to identify the file contents as being duplicates (is it exact?) But there was no indication on screen whether a byte-by-byte comparison or a checksum was used. I went to the help menu and selected "Duplicate Catcher Help". The response was "Help isn't available for Duplicate Catcher".

I checked the Read Me file. No details regarding content based file comparison were included.

Without knowing how the program arrived at it's conclusion that my files were duplicates based on content, it is of no use to me as I don't blindly trust other developers, especially when they distribute their software without full documentation.

I quit the program and moved it to the trash.

This software *looks* useful (the content matching feature is exactly what I am looking for) and could be functional but I'm giving it one star because it is of no use to me whatsoever because of the lack of documentation about the content matching feature.

Manual selection of the duplicates is annoying. - acky

File contents are compared with a checksum. I don't have the code to hand and it was a long time ago but I believe it's a similar algorithm to the command line tool cksum.
You're right this should be included in the documentation. Actually I'm surprised, after over two years and countless users your the first person to ask.

Manual selection of files isn't necessary. Again the documentation is lacking in this area but if you read my previous post on this page I outline use of the automatic selection features.

Thanks for the feedback.
