When ordering SiteGrinder we ask for your Photoshop serial number, but, in fact, only the first 16 digits are needed, and wary users are welcome to submit just that amount of information not more.
When you later upgrade Photoshop, we have a form where you can request new unlocks for you new copy of Photoshop at no charge. (Green button bottom of our home page).
We've been using this system for nearly all of our products since 1996.
Our registration system is not unique to us - there are other plug-ins that use a similar system. And Adobe in their developer documentation specifically makes the serial number available to plug-in developers for this purpose. From page 59 of the Photoshop 7 API Guide: Serial number of the plug–in host as a string. You can use this to implement copy protection for your plug–in module.

I, too was surprised when your registration process required my Photoshop registration number. I have a *large* number of Photoshop plug-ins and have never experienced such a request -- despite your statement to the contrary. Even more interesting, is the fact that, for huge numbers of Adobe product CS users, their Photoshop registration number is *also* the registration number for either two or four *additional* Adobe products. In sum, Adobe is trusting you to maintain the security of registration numbers for a very large number of products most of which have absolutely nothing to do with your product. I'm no lawyer, but I'd wonder if you underwent any significant breach of security -- and it *does* happen -- whether your liability wouldn't be enormous.Reply to This
