EyeTV Quit Hangs

Feedback Type:  Review

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Less than a month

Recommend Product: NO

I've been using EyeTV and the Plextor ConvertX with my Mac Mini and have been plagued by a problem when trying to quit. EyeTV works fine until I try to quit the program. It does not do a clean quit and the next time you start EyeTV, the live TV window does not respond and displays: "one moment please..." and never starts playing. At this point, the activity monitor shows CPU usage pegged around 90%. If I then try to quit again, it appears EyeTV does not completely unload and the system CPU pegs around 98% utilization. This, of course, slows everything else down. The only recovery is to completely power off the Mac. It will then work great until the next time I try to quit. Obviously, this is kludgey to have to power down the Mac every time I need to quit EyeTV.

This hanging during the quit is not an unknown problem and is described by Elgato as "intermittent" and "fixed" in 1.7.1. However, in my case, it is not intermittent nor is it fixed.

Steps taken to troubleshoot:

- repairing disk permissions
- switching USB ports and cables
- completely removing and reinstalling the software (including eyetv Helper and the *.pls files)
- resetting pram and nvram
- same symptoms with v 1.64, 1.7.1 and 1.72.b13 (provided by Elegato) of the software.

All the above steps were suggested by Elgato technical support which has been fairly responsive. However, they have not provided further suggestions since I sent them the System Profile 2 days ago.

Because the dealer has a limited time for returns, if Elgato can't provide some solution by next Tuesday, I'm going to return the product and try either Formac or EvolutionTV.

EyeTV Quit Hangs - DCT

If I unplug the USB cable from the back of the EyeTV while the application/TV is running then quit the application, it never hangs.
