Where is TiVo To Go?

Feedback Type:  Commentary

Contributed by: JMHammer Sunday, February 20 2005 @ 06:43 AM PST

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Over One Year

Recommend Product: YES

I want feature parity. Given that the TiVo itself uses Unix, I don't see why we can't have a Mac OS X version of TiVo To Go. I've had my TiVo for three years now and I can't imagine going back to plain old TV. But I can certainly imagine going to Elgato's EyeTV because I'm tired of being treated like a second-class TiVo customer because I use a Mac.

Where is TiVo To Go? - GeekElectro

TiVo has provided a way for owners of Series2 boxes to download the recorded programs. The problem may be in creating a workable codec for Mac OS X which will allow the .TiVo files to be decrypted and then saved as MPEG2 files.

Try using the info below, and experiment with different codecs to see if anyone can get good results on (legally) decrypting and viewing your previously recorded shows.

A little known piece of info is that all TiVo shows are encrypted with a Media Access Key when recorded to the TiVo DVR. My info is that this has been done for quite some time, but hasn't been publicized.

A posting on tivocommunity.com mentioned how to get TiVo-provided access to files you have recorded. This only allows you to download the files to your computer. Being able to decrypt and view them is still a problem (unless someone has some useful info about a usable codec?).

Again, you have a right to copy these files over to your own computer for your own use. Some pay-per-view and various other shows may be encrypted or encoded differently. So not all shows can be copied over and viewed on your computer. That said, here is the information.

Go to
https://<yourtivoip>
(this is a secure http connection - port 443)
and enter 'tivo' as the username and your Media Access Key (MAK) as the
password.
You have to go to the TiVo website and make sure you have a MAK assigned to you, and that you have the TiVo ToGo enabled for your Series2 box (sorry, Series1 and others not supported... yet?)
It's a web server on the Tivo that you can use to download the shows.
When you click on the 'download' link, use the same username/password
combo.
The download will be limited by current activity on your TiVo, and by
network conditions (link speed, etc.).
