if you have fink (fink.sf.net) installed, you can try octave, a free matlab alternative

Even without fink you can use octave as an alternative to Matlab: see http://hpc.sourceforge.net/

Even though the interface isn't as "slick" as Matlab's (not that Matlab's interface is all that slick...) I actually prefer Octave: it run's almost all my Matlab code without alteration; it's free; and it has better benchmarks (at least on my stuff).
