Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: 1-6 months

Recommend Product: YES

STOP STOP STOP setting the program to launch by default when you log in. This is absolute crap. This is not Windows, don't treat us like Windows users. I use Skype once in a while, and it's absolutely stupid for it to launch automatically without ever first asking me if I would like this behavior. YES, I know how to disable it, and I did, but that is not the point. The point is that it's rude and presumptious for a developer to assume that because you put an app on your system, that you will ALWAYS want it to run. If I want a program to launch at login, I will set it to do that. DON'T assume what I want my computer to do. If you want to have any success on the Mac platform, you're going to have to learn to play by the Mac rules. If you make a program that does whatever the heck it wants and has an ugly Windows interface, they you might as well just start whining now about how you don't get the support you need from users. It'll be your own fault.

Sorry, AP, but I think he has a valid point.

Comparing the poster's language to the treatment and torture of prisoners at Abu Gharaib is preposterous -- and this would be true even if his language were profane (which it is not anyway). Yes, the poster is upset, but his language does not cross the line in my view.

the developer may want to offer an install option to "load at login" or not.

Just an informative warning when an app or installer adds/updates user startup items would be more polite than doing it silently.

I grant you this is better than nothing, but there is really no good reason for a developer to do this to an optional application like Skype. I realize that in the case of apps like Skype it's important to have them running even when the user doesn't necessarily intend to actively use them. A connection needs to be made just to establish the network and make it usable and to build the list of potential contacts. So in this regard it's different from word processing -- granted.

Even so, the developer should URGE this in a message but still make it only an option -- a check box during the install is advisable.

Skype 1.0.0.0 addresses this issue to my satisfaction, as described in the usage tip I just posted.

I haven't installed 1.0.0.0 yet (why so many .0's?), but if it gives you the option during setup, that's better than nothing, but still not perfect, as long as the default is for it to be on.

When I installed whatever ridiculous version number it was that I installed, I did not get a setup option. Maybe this was because I was replacing a previous version, that also did not have it. Either way, my point is valid. Companies need to stop assuming that they know what's best for users. I probably can't even count how many people I know who have AIM running on their PCs and have no clue how to shut it down. Sometimes other people's screen names are signing on and they don't even realize it. Does Skype want to be better than that? If they intend to gain Mac users, I sure hope so.

I agree. My computer belongs to me and not to skype. I will not install it for that reason alone. I'll just use my cell phone after 9pm. Who needs instrusive software?

Auto launch at login IS an option - NeoX360

But if you were paying attention when the initial setup screen appeared, you would see that there is indeed a checkbox to turn this off. It is checked by default to launch when you login, but one simple click and it is gone. Hey guess what, when iChat first came out it did worse, not only did it start at login but it also placed a menu extra in the menu bar! So get over it and uncheck the box, it's not the end of the world that something should auto start.

"play by the Mac Rules"

It's comments like these that give PC users ammo and make honest hard working developers re-evaluate the mac as a platform...

I must have missed this. It doesn't reflect negatively on any given user or platform; it's just one of those things. Anyone can overlook something. Thanks for calling this to my attention.

So a platform where other companies decide how you use your computer is best?

As far as I know Skype uses P2P Networks. The thought is to share your bandwith. The more users do it the better the the connections are. So share! If you do not want that (which would be egoistic) you can easy stop the automatic launch by under systems preferences/users/startup items
