This is a great effect.

A good expansion on existing features would be HD resolutions and choices for other video codecs.

A new feature that would make it absolutely superb would be the ability to zoom into the map for a close-up of the current position, with an accompanying motion path for the map. Of course, the map bitmap would have to be of a suitably high resolution to allow for sufficient zoom in.

With a map zoom in effect, the position could remain within a given range of the center of the screen, and the map would then smoothly pan across the screen, following the path. The end result would be a more dynamic, dramatic effect than just a static map. For example, similar to the map path effect as seen in the first Indiana Jones movie.
