DV is LOSSY!... meaning... you LOSE image quality... it compresses in multiple ways to keep data rates down... thus DV is 4:1:1.. not native 4:4:4 color space. Every compression gets worse and worse.... compressing at 5:1 PLUS color space to 4:1:1. If you want EXACT color space and zero artifacting.... Sheer is it... plus, it creates files that are typically 50% the size of the Animation codec. It can also support true 10-bit per channel color space, something Animation doesn't support... nor DV. In comparison to other formats such as DigiBeta, DVCPRO5, D9, and especially D5... DV pales in comparison. I personally can hardly stand using DV because of it's horrendous lack of color space. DV is barely passable as a broadcast standard being left primarily to news gathering (where quality is the least concern), small business/corporate projects or when size of the camera and weight becomes an issue (such as backpacking deep into the Amazon jungle).I would never take an animation I've created and render out in DV codec... unless that was the final delivery method... but I would only create the DV codec version from a Sheer codec master anyway. I want one 100% pure master around all of the time.
Sheer also compresses in real-time... unlike the Microcosm codec which compresses at like 1/4 real-time.
Sheer is the pinnacle of codecs for media professionals.
