If you simply press and hold down the mute key while starting up, the startup chime will be... you know, muted.

More tip - tuqqer

Good tips, but for those of us who autostart our computers every morning at 5:45 to run Retrospect, etc, and have it hooked up to a kiss butt set of speakers, that are usually cranked quite loud, these startup sound mute utilities are a must have. First thing I installed when I went to Tiger.
