"I guess we're all going to have to get used to .app file extensions on everything sooner or later"

jeffseaver: The Finder only shows an application's .app extension when the application's name has a '.' in it, e.g. "Adobe Reader 7.0.app." Remove the ".0" and the Finder will just show "Adobe Reader 7".
