thanks for the advice, downloaded the combined installer, disconnected all firewire and updated; restarted, ran disk permissions, restarted; still no firewire dvd burner connection

I'm on apple's discussion forums now and a LOT of people are having similar problems, no fixes yet

apple really should research the potential impact of their updates, not to happy that I downloaded a bomb

they do. That is what the AppleSeed Program is about. It allows end users to test Apple's software, both new and updates on their own system, in all kinds of environments. We did not have any problems with firewire dvd burners that I remember seeing.
