Let's consider a simple scenario. My laptop hardisk is fairly full, and I don't want to use all my remaining space on 30gb of songs. In fact, I buy an iPod so that I can offload at least 10gb of stuff onto it.

But iTunes wants me to keep the songs on my laptop as well as on my iPod, and doesn't have any functionality built into put the stuff straight onto the pod without clogging up the hard disk.
