I'm confused.

My iBook came with World Book 7.0 (that's what it says on the media CD; rather oddly the app's 'About' menu item is greyed out). The OSX with my macine at the time was 10.3

This worked fine until I upgraded to OSX 10.3.4 at which point WB simply died on launch.

After a while I found the update site and updated to 7.3 (according to the name of the file I downloaded - as I say, 'About' doesn't work).

This works fine.

Now it seems 8.1 has been launched. Click on the download link and you get to the same page I used to update to 7.3. The dropdown menu (which instructs you to get the version from the label of your media CD; odd for a start since my CD is obviously still 7.0 yet the software is now 7.3) offers the options 6.0.x, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2 and 8,x. No mention of 7.3. OK, I'll choose 7.0 since that's what it says on my CD.

And what starts downloading? The 7.3 updater. Again.

So what are the requirements for downloading 8.1? Or should I not bother?

If you have 7.3 and your World Book folder is WB 2003 change the 2003 to 2004 and select version 7.2 in "select version" then download 8.1 updater. It works.

You can't update to 8.1. Your iBook came with the World Book 2003 edition. The latest update for that version is 7.3.

8.1 is the latest update for the 2004 edition.

OK, I'll buy that. Why is the distinction between WB 2003 and 2004 not made clear on the WB update site?

Good question, I have no idea. :P

For some reason they distinguish by version numbers instead of year. AFAIK, version 7 (all of them) is 2003, and version 8 is 2004.

I have WB 6.0.3, and when I choose 6.0.x from the drop-down menu on the indicated download page, it says I don't need an update. :-\
