Type10, if you get into System Prefs : Date & Time : Clock tab, and turn off the 'Show Date and Time', that'll clear space for MCC.

Then, in MCC : Prefs (Cmd-,) : Menu Item tab, Postion 'left' will get you close to the old Apple setup.

btw, I find "%A, %b %e, %1I:%M:%S %p" a good format for the dislay.
