The main problem I have with Virex is that you have to be logged into an admin account for it to automatically update the virus definitions etc., because it only allows you to write-in a password and not a username (because it assumes you're already logged into an admin account). The advice I've been given is that you should always use a standard account for your day-to-day activities on Mac OS X, for added security. It seems counter-productive for virus software to require you to lower this level of security by making you work in an admin account. Am I right?

Have to be an admin user for eupdates - Doonboggle

I agree... this is one of my biggest gripes with Virex.

Have to be an admin user for eupdates - ClassicUser

I completely agree: This is a stupid approach for the application to take. All other Mac OS X-savvy applications, if they require authentication, put up a standard authentication dialog - with both username and password fields. The fact that Virex assumes you won't want to change the username from your current account merely shows how out-of-touch the McAfee developers are toward the Mac.

Of course, Symantec's NAV isn't much better - but at least handles authentication correctly...
