You do need hardware (supplied in the PhoneValet software/hardware box). If you click on the "Download demo" link, there is a description of their money-back guarantee. I've used PV since July, and I'm very impressed bot with the product and the responsiveness of the company. I've even had callers leave messages about how much they like the answering "machine." I wish it were possible to use this software without anyadditional hardware. I would use it, but the hardware requirement is unbearable for laptop users. I think the built-in modem port, the speaker and the microphone are good enough for this application, with no need for any extras.
