Beware the licensing

Feedback Type:  Commentary

Contributed by: Dez Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 07:54 AM PDT

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: 6-12 months

Recommend Product: NO

The licensing for this product is a bit of a pain. The licence code you must enter is dependent on the MAC address of the particular Mac the product is installed on. While I understand why they did this, it means when you upgrade your Mac you must ask for a new licence code. When I did this last month, it took over a week to obtain my new code, and since I had already sold my old Mac, I was unable to connect to the office VPN for all that time.

I upgraded from v2 to v3 - I will leave them behind when they next ask me to pay for an upgrade. IPSecuritas is already working for me...

Improved - equinux

Thank you for your feedback. Since the introduction of the new system we have greatly improved the issuing speed and have phased out initial problems with the new system. You should no longer have to wait more than one day to get a new license code.

Beware the licensing - tech-man

with no support or customer service available (except from 3am-12noon), i was forced to send my clients on the road using ipsecuritas (free) instead of vpn tracker.

now i have to ask myself why i spent money on something that handicaps me rather than helps me provide my clients with vpn. why did i bother? because sonicwall recommends vpn tracker for osx clients.

now i know better. it cost me close to $300 for useless licenses...useless with the rediculous registration scheme used by equinux - and useless without REASONABLE support in timely fashion (sorry, even though you guys are in germany, support needs to be available during normal work hours in the USA).

how ironic...and sad...that opensource/free software got the job done while expensive (albiet unnecessary) software did nothing but lighen my wallet.

i'm very disappointed and i will NEVER recommend vpn tracker to ANY of my clients.

freeware options - echt_e

As I understand it VPN Tracker taps into the same unix protocols that any of these VPN GUI applications does. The difference is that for some configurations getting the details right is difficult. I was not able to get IPsecuritas to work for my users (maybe my limitation?). I am not sure that all have the same options for tweaking settings as I have tried looking at the settings provided by the VPN Tracker setup and while things are in different windows there were also some things just no available to set.

To be fair, VPN Tracker does offer some enhancements that may justify some of the cost. it is nice to simply install, pick a setting and have it work.

Beware the licensing - agreed - echt_e

We have 10 licenses and recently had the same issue. I think my turnaround was shorter but there is no reason the reset could not be placed in the license management tool to save that time. The key assures that you can only use with the mac address or serial number of one machine.
