Palm Desktop sucks....but I got it working. - ralphcash

I am working on upgrading my Palm Desktop software so I can use it and hotsync under Mac OS X. I need to be able to do this under Mac OS X to take advantage of new features for one of my Palm PDA programs (ePocrates). Currently I use my Palm PDA and hotsync under Mac OS 9.2.2.

I have a PowerBook G3 running Mac OS X 10.3.8 (and 9.2.2). My PDA is a Palm m515 running Palm OS 4.1. All my desktop application software works well with Mac OS X except I still use Palm Desktop 4.1 under OS 9 and hotsync my PDA under OS 9. I am getting ready to upgrade my Palm Desktop to 4.2.1 so that I can use it and hotsync under Mac OS X and I need some advice.

I have downloaded Palm Desktop 4.2.1 for the Mac and unstuffed it (with Stuffit Expander 9.0.1) but I haven't installed it. I have read about a lot of problems with this installation on the PalmOne Help Forums and on the Version Tracker Feedback Summaries. I am leery of the installation.

I found advice in the PalmOne Support Knowledge Library that recommended:

Palm Desktop considerations when upgrading from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X
If you install Palmâ„¢ Desktop 4.x for Mac on Mac OS 9, and then later upgrade to Mac OS X, follow these steps:
1. Move the Palm folder from the Mac OS 9 Documents folder to the Mac User's Documents folder in Mac OS X.
2. Run the Palm Desktop software 4.x installer in Mac OS X.
3. Reinstall any third-party conduits. Check with the Mac OS X conduit developers for information on updates to their conduits.

I'm looking for more specific advice on how to make this upgrade with as little down time as possible. The main third party PDA software applications I use are:
Epocrates
Documents To Go

Any help you could give would be appreciated.
I'm sorry to bother you. I don't know how to install anything as a root user?
