I found SyncUp doinig a search for sync/backup programs. It was the last item on the last page all by itself. I downloaded it and tried it. I didn't check the integrity of the data but it looks like it works.
I am impressed by the interface. It is clean, simple and very 'mac like'. There aren't a lot of controls or buttons and I predict this will probably make SyncUp really popular with individuals who just want a simple back up utility.
I note in the read me it says it "no longer tries to preserve the owner, group or permissions of files." I wonder about that and hope Thomas Bauer will comment.
I have been looking for a solution for a client of mine and have to say that this program has to be the easiest to use and understand of all the programs I have looked at to date. The only thing I would change would be the use of the question mark (?) as an icon to choose your destination file. Using the question mark is a little confusing since so many programs use the question mark for "Help." Funny thing is I contemplated for a few moments on what Thomas could have used and was unable to think of anything better. (Not that I necessarily would have! :-/)
This app looks really good and I will continue to follow it's progress.

re: One to watch - freeridecoding
thank you for your rating and your comment.there are still a few issues open with the app (like the ?, problems quitting in an error dialog ...) that need to be solved. to things really cool the whole app should be redone in cocoa.this is some work. unfortunately there has not been even 1 donation to motivate me ;-(
but messages like yours DO motivate me ,-))
regarding the ownership and permissions: originally i wanted to preserver as much as i could. i changed the policy because i found that it created more problems than it solved.
if you would like to restore as another user for instance, or pull out data from your backup, you want to belong the files to yourself when finished. preserving also prevents you from syncing with a AFP sharepoint directly which is nice if it works.
i think syncup should act like an "automated syncing finder file copying". it is really intended to be a tool for as user who would like to backup HIS OWN data easily. no admin passwords required and no special knowhow.
it is definitly not the tool to backup whole systems, or folders of several users, perform automatic backups at certain times.
there are other tools that can do that for you.
to keep things simple you have to limit the features - but of course i am open for discussion. please let me know your feedback, what you like and what you do not like.
please mail me directily at tb@freeridecoding.net - i do not always check these forums.
it makes me very happy to see that people are using this app or are interested in its progress - and this will motivate me to update it.
cheers
thomas
