I'm beginning to wonder if I should be using AppleJack. Every time I allow it to run the full battery of tests, it seems to screw up some of my icons, assigning random one to certain files. Eventually the Mac heals itself but I'll be darned if I know how. Either way, it seems that AppleJack might be doing something it should not. Can the author please respond?

can the script be adusted to not delete (or at least to move to temp folder before, then put back after the cache folders are flushed) these files? i can live without the icons if i don't lose file association.:)

When you let any utility delete the system cache (whether it's AppleJack or Xoptimize or Cocktail or whatnot), the utility will delete files by the name of com.apple.dock.iconcache.nnn (where nnn is the user id). Basically it deletes the user's cache of icons. The system should heal itself, but alas, it doesn't always, for some reason. It will also, by the way, delete the Launch Services cache and User Pictures cache as well, so these might need to be rebuilt as well. No idea why Apple puts launch services in Library/Caches, since it's more of a preference file than a cache but...Reply to This
