I stand corrected

Feedback Type:  Commentary

Contributed by: Levon River Wednesday, September 08 2004 @ 03:48 PM PDT

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Less than a month

Recommend Product: NO

After doing several very specific tests, I now find that apparently Unison does *not* overwrite a file with the same file name in a given path when saving attachments, as I earlier stated with good-faith belief. It appears that it appends a ".1" to the first instance of such a file, prior to any extension. This does not excuse the failure to provide any alert whatsoever that there is already a file with that name, nor does it excuse the egregious absence of standard Mac file requesters in all instances of saving *anything* from *any* part of the program so the user has control over where and under what name a file is saved. There also is the enormously confusing quasi-duplication and/or non-duplication (MIT hasn't figured it out yet) of listings in the Message, Files, and Images panels for some groups since an IMAGE attached to a MESSAGE is a FILE *and* is an IMAGE. So on what basis do these things appear in what panel? Ask the gods, ask yer Magick 8-Ball, but don't ask the documentation. Also don't try to figure out if clearing something in one panel clears it from the others--not in a group you haven't visited in a while in which thousands of files/images/messages--whatEVER--have collected. Not unless you have the rest of your life ahead of you to complete the job by bouncing back and forth between panes. Don't forget when doing it that somehow there can be multiple IMAGES in any given FILE--even though some idiots, like me, actually believe that an image IS a file. Apparently now it's not. Apparently the developers have their own lexicon taped up on their wall, and someday they may let us ALL know what these terms now mean. And, YES, I've bought the program.

Levon,

It should be pretty straightforward:

"Files" shows you every binary post in a group.
"Images" takes that list of files, and shows you ONLY the image files. (.jpg, etc.) with scalable image thumbnails.
"Music" takes that list of files, and shows you ONLY the music files (.mp3, etc.) with MP3 streaming previews.

That's really all there is to it. I must admit that we don't get very much e-mail from people confused on this topic, so I'd really like to talk to you further and find out where the wires are getting crossed and what we can do to explain this better in the future.

Again, instead of clogging up VersionTracker, can you please send us e-mail directly? It will allow us to quickly address your questions and help you better understand Unison, while leaving VersionTracker focused on, you know, actual software reviews, that might be helpful to others.

Thanks in advance! Send e-mail to unison @ panic . com.

Again, I apologize for any confusion, and look forward to helping you further.

Sincerely,
Cabel

"It should be pretty straightforward"

I couldn't agree more. When you get there, let me know.

"Again, instead of clogging up VersionTracker, can you please send us e-mail
directly..."

Instead of trying to run VersionTracker, can you please invest your time in synchronizing the newsgroup inventories in your three viewing panels? I don't want to go too logical on you all at once, but try starting there and graduate it out of the C-64 lab category.

"...leaving VersionTracker focused on, you know, actual software reviews..."

I guess your conviction that "review" = "only glowing praise" might account for the serious issues I've raised in my actual software reviews of your program. BTW, why is there no provision for saving anything more than the first part of a multi-part binary as an attachment from the Messages panel? Is it because you're too busy writing condescending reviews of reviews instead of code?

I stand corrected - Tony Walton

I have to rise to Cabel's defence here (I am an disinterested party). Reviews, positive and negative, are listened to. Somr of the fucntionality changes in 1.5.1 cf, 1.5 are in direct response to threads on comp.sys.mac.apps for example - not particularly glowing reviews. He has always been responsive to me whan I've reported bugs (and yes, I'm still having problems wth 1.5.1 though it's a big improvement over 1.5 IME).

I would be interested to know how it knows an image is an image, though, Cabel - are you saying that if the Subject: line on a binary contains ".jpg" (or .gif, or .tif, or whatever) it's an image?

Hi Tony,

Thanks for the kind words.

You're right -- we use the Subject: line to determine if an image is an image. This is because it would be extremely impractical (bordering on ridiculous) to download the _content_ of every message just to determine the filename extension.

The good news is that in 95% of the image binary groups, this system works perfectly. In off-the-beaten-path groups and servers -- that are more like mailing lists with lots of images posted as MIME attachments -- it is sometimes inaccurate, and images don't appear in "Images". We'll always be looking at ways to improve this in the future.

Hope this helps!

Best,
Cabel

Hi Levon,

"Can you please invest your time in synchronizing the newsgroup inventories in your three viewing panels?"

I apologize very much; I simply don't understand what you mean. This is exactly why I'm asking you to e-mail me, so we can work this out directly together, because there's obviously miscommunication.

As I stated above: messages shows you everything as messages. Files shows you every binary post, as easy to manage files (with file groups). Music shows you binary posts that are identifable as music from the subject line. Images shows binary posts that are identifable as images from the subject line. The views are absolutely as "syncrhonized" as they will ever be.

Please, please send us e-mail so we can better understand what it is you're referring to.

"I guess your conviction that "review" = "only glowing praise" might account for the serious issues I've raised in my actual software reviews of your program."

No, not at all -- I certainly don't expect only glowing reviews! No software is perfect, and certainly we're always improving Unison! it just seems to me that your issues with Unison are a matter of perception or misunderstanding, since they're issues nobody else -- and I literally mean nobody else -- has contacted us with.

Again, if you can write us e-mail, we can work together to figure out the disconnect, and hopefully you'll better understand Unison -- or i'll better understand what we can do to improve the program.

I look forward to your e-mail! Thanks in advance!

Best,
Cabel
