Ok - badidea

I know what you mean, I also call all mpeg4 AVIs divx movies...
But when the company DivX (note the large D and X) is talking about it, they always mean their own codec that was first introduced with version 3.
If you really want you can also play XVID movies with this codec but this does include a little work because you would have to change the FourCC code of those movies. That's a little four diggit code that defines the kind of codec and version used in a movie. There is an app called DivXTool and you just have to drop your divx AVI onto it and it will display some options that will make most of your movies play perfectly with Quicktime and the official DivX codec.
The app is not from the company DivX (you can find it on versiontracker) and it does only work with AVIs that contain a MP3 soundtrack (no AC3 or WMA)...
