Our prior post was incorrect; latest tests confirm that since updating from OS X 10.3.4 to OS X 10.3.5, CCCed backup drives do boot. The problem appears isolated to OS X 10.3.4.
We are pursuing a daul backup policy using both CCC and SuperDuper. SuperDuper works well, too, and is free per the developer; only advanced features such as scheduling require registration and a payment.
In both cases we do complete backups to internal HDDs and external firewire drives. We use Disk Utility to erase any backup drive before cloning.
