I've been on eBay now for over five years, and one improvement I saw almost as long that they never made is to have auctions with flexible closing times, just as auctions are "in the real world." In other words, have an auction close at the specific time or a certain time period, say 10 minutes, after the last bid, whichever is later. This certainly will get rid of snipers. If an auction is set to end at noon, then a snipe at 11:59:57 simply will extend the auction to 12:09:57. I've tried to communicate that idea to eBay (and haven't the slightest idea how they can program it) but can't figure out how to give them the idea.

Here's a thought... how about you bid the maximum about you are willing to pay then if somebody snipes you it doesn't really matter because they exceeded what you where willing to pay anyway.... I am going to give this program a go and report back.

Wrong. If you use eBay, you will be well served with a sniper tool. If you don't like the fact that an eBay auction can be sniped, don't use eBay.

Personally, I like eBay the way it is and do not want to see a change. eBay isn't the only auction site; if you don't like their business model, go somewhere else. Nobody is forcing you to use eBay.

I've also been on eBay for over 5 years and I have no problem with the concept of sniping. It's part and parcel of being on an online auction. If you don't like it, try QXL, Lycos or one of the other second-rate auctions.

According to lots of articles on the web, ebay is aware of the sniping and is OK with it. Anyway, I like sniping, so there :-).
