I was able to workaround VLC's choppy audio with a DivX AVI file by muting VLC's audio and playing the sound in QuickTime Player. I had this problem with both the 0.7.2 and 0.6.2 versions of VLC.
-Open the file in QuickTime Player
-Hit Continue at the compressor warning
-Play the audio
-Pause at 10 seconds
-Open the same file in VLC
-Stop it
-Choose Mute from the Audio menu
-Play it
-Switch to QuickTime Player
-Watch the VLC clock
-Push play when the VLC clock hits 10 seconds
-Switch to VLC and watch the video
Synchronizing the sound may be difficult but should be possible. If at first you don't succeed, try again.
