Can you imagine using iPartition or for that matter VolumeWorks (the competition) on an active disk without a full backup or clone of its content? If you have to do that, then the Disk Utility will look after you and you clone back. I have no reason to believe this won't work, I'm just not going to test it on a working boot disk and believe that it will still boot afterwards.

Subsequent research has shown that this was extensively discussed here:

Clearly, there can be problems that require a backup before you begin, and equally clearly, the iPartition folks are ready to help if you do have a problem.
