Feedback Type:  Usage Tip

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Less than a month

Recommend Product: YES

Applecare France told me my new PB 15 1.33 dvd drive would lock itself on zone of the 5th dvd it reads. Will VLC allow me to read dvd's from any zone? thus avoiding to have to download any firmware to reset the zone to zero?

Thanks!

DVD zones - ecammit

Probably not. As far as I know zone decoding is done by the DVD drive's hardware. Unless you have an illegal decryption software program, nothing will circumvent that.

I don't know about the legality of the firmware upgrades in France, but, as long as you read all the instructions, it appears to be a fairly safe process. Just be very aware that should the process fail, neither Apple, nor the developer will repair or replace the drive for free. Many people have successfully modified their PowerBooks and iBooks. (I will neither admit, nor deny, having modified my 'Books.)
I'm sure if you do a search, you'll be able to find out if the specific DVD drive in your PB is one that can be upgraded.
