How do you know if you need this update? My router has all sorts of numbers on it. Which is what?

Go into your router, on the initial page, at the top, there should be a set of numbers followed by a date. That tells you what firmware your router is using.

For the most part, if things are running smoothly, and you don't want to mess with it...don't. :)
