As someone who is gradually rating a huge library set to shuffle, this is useful to determine at a glance when I haven't rated the song I'm listening to. Previously I've been using a script that requests a rating for unrated tracks, but this method is a bit more subtle and allows star entry at any point during the song. Combined with hot keys for each star choice via Butler, I have a rating system that requires no mouse use whatsoever and doesn't interrupt my work if I ignore it. Nice. I'm going to give it a try over the next few days and see if it proves to be the "solution" to my "problem".

Good heavens man, why haven't you purchased Synergy yet? Anyone who will go through all that to handle their ratings would find the $5 or so for Synergy to be a very wonderful deal.

While Synergy is an excellent app and I registered it long ago, I prefer to handle iTunes hot keys via Butler now because it offers slightly different features that I find useful (for instance, providing a pop up menu at my cursor location or a corner of the screen when I need it instead of the menu bar). When I'm deep in work I forget to check if a song is rated or not; the script I've been using demands a rating for any unrated song when it plays. iTunesRating instead keeps me apprised of each track's rating status at a glance at any time during the song, no pull down or pop up a menus required.
