Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Less than a month

Recommend Product: YES

I have just tried out the new MS Office 2004 and must say its a great product by any standards. How people can slash it the way happens on this forum beats me. Must be Microsoft blindness, because this is the best business app by any standard. And believe me: I do hate Microsoft and I resent being forced to use MS apps on our Macs, but what is the alternative? Name me ONE competitor with a server version alternative, such great features, a project center and so forth. OK, we could program it in filemaker, but us that really an alternative for an plufg and play app like MS Office 2004? I doubt it.

However, to make it work for my company we need to install a Windows server running Exchange (or somebody must have other ideas!?). A WINDOWS SERVER FOR GODS SAKE!!!! We are Mac addicts in an all Apple environment, but we NEED this functionality as all businesses will. But there is no real alternative!!!

Why Apple doesn't come up with competitive package beats me completely. How can you expect corporations to switch to an all Apple environment when there just is no real alternative for MS Office and Exchange server. So Apple doensn't want the business customers? But why do they deliver xServers then?

It is really frustrating for any Mac loving company to see Microsoft come up with such a great solution like Office 2004, but needing an Exchange/Windows server to use it in groups. Apple does a lot of things great, but serving the corporate community is not one of them!

What could you possibly be doing that would *require* that you set up M$ Exchange?

Well, there is no real group server except exchange with features like available time or other things - all Apple apps provide a peer to peer functionality, only, they are not integrated into one GUI and do not run over a centralized server. For a company with more than five people working for it you simply need some central instance to coordinate work and time and availability etc.pp. And there is nothing comparable to Exchange/Office that does this only remotly as well …
