The key thing to remember about DVDxDV is that it doesn't seem to be intended to work with commercial DVDs. I can't say for sure; I haven't tried to do so. But for what it is intended, the program works fast and flawlessley. I burn a lot of DVDs from home VHS tapes using a Sansui VHS-DVD dubbing system (Sears has it). The resulting DVDs are then put into my G4 Powerbook and I uses DVDxDV to make movies from just the segments I want to extract. It has worked flawlessly for me for the last few months. The interface is a little weak (could use more of an OSX feel), but other than that, it works as described. Great work.
