OSXvnc (server) and Chicken of the VNC (client) are completely free, and work beautifully. Why would someone want to pay for the same functionality?

Maybe because OSXvnc and Chicken of the VNC dont work as perfectly as you say. Also Apple (with their Remote Desktop tool) and Timbuktu both think there's a market out there.

Unfortunately Desktop Transporter (which actually doesn't seem to be based on VNC) doesn't work too well either.
