Existing users, 
Run the update.
Restart your Mac into safe mode, run fsck -y.
Run fsck-y again if it tells you "FILE SYSTEM MODIFIED", do this until it says it no more.
reboot.
Upon getting your desktop, repair permissions using Onyx, Cocktail or Macaroni.
Reboot again, all will be well.
I have followed the above after EVERY patch, security or system, and
have had ONLY ONE ISSUE ( the dreaded 10.2.5 patch that fried my USB HUB).
If you do this, your machine shall work wonderfully!!!

Mtjmac – That is not good advice. As Angostura points out, journalling and fsck -y are incompatible. If you just want to satisfy your curiosity you can run fsck -fn. Then why the list of gizmos for permissions repair? Have you trashed Disk Utility?
I don't want to be rude but we should each know our own limitations. Your BOLD type and bold assertions might cause a newbie to follow your "instructions" and then become needlessly worried.

I've never done any of that crap on any of my 5 macs and have never had a problem with an update. But then I am very careful not to break any mirrors or put up an umbrella in the house. fixing permissions before & after install will do. no need to boot in single user mode. people who don't lknow what they're doing will do more harm than good. if you're worried about the integrety of your startup volume you can boot from install CD1 and run disk utility from the installer menu.Thursday, May 13 2004 @ 03:16 AM PDT

Since 10.3 turns on journaling by default, fsck -y won't actually work for most people, and probably isn't necessary. You can force a fsck if you really want, but I see little need.Checking permissions is probably better advice.
