PHONES HOME!....why!!!

Feedback Type:  Commentary

Contributed by: trance Friday, April 30 2004 @ 04:08 PM PDT

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Less than a month

Recommend Product: NO

I would say this was an excellent app except for the fact that I am immediately put off by the fact that it phones home and you cannot turn it off, which is inexcusable for an ftp app which might have sensitive data passing through and you don't know what info it is sending back home.
Not to mention that there is absolutely no reason why the author should feel the need to have it phone home considering it is free unless you want to pay for it.

PHONES HOME!....why!!! - dkocher

The application requests the file at update.cyberduck.ch/versionlist.xml if the property "update.check" is set to true. It doesn't send ANY information to the server. You can have a look at the source available at http://sudo.ch/cvs/cyberduck-cocoa The update check can be disabled by unchecking the checkbox in the Update check dialog or by entering defaults write ch.sudo.cyberduck update.check false in a Terminal. The checkbox to disable the update check will be moved to the preferences in a later version. Please keep in mind this is beta software and therefore I would like to let people know when a new version is available. -David Kocher

Thanks for the explanation. You'll appreciate why in these days people are wary of software that they find has unadvertised features that might threaten system security.

You might consider having the update check OFF by default, with a check box to enable it if desired.
